IITs are opening wider for more students

India's leading institutes for 50 years, and giving admission to only the brightest of students , the Indian Institutes of Technology will finally open their gates more wide. Assigned with the task of reaching out to more Indian students, IIT directors are drawing up plans to set up a virtual university, says a report published in The Times of India.. This decision has been taken as part of the National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT) whose details is still needs to be worked out and the plan will take minimum two years to get implemented..

The main purpose of this decision is to make quality education accessible to many more students using modern tools instead of setting up brick-and-mortar campuses. Many industries will be involved in administering the programmes and labs will be created where students can perform experiments. The IITs will take care of the entry, the exit and develop the courses.
